#WhatsInNotts is back for it’s 7th week on the trot and although we can’t wow you with a week bursting at the seams, what we can offer you is a week of sheer talent. Take a short but sweet look at what we’ve got in store for you below.
Rock City // Rescue Rooms // The Bodega // Stealth // Rough Trade // The Maze // Brickworks // Spanky Van Dykes
Rock City
If you’ve managed to piece yourself back together after The Stranglers killer set, Rock City opens it’s doors to none other than electronic songstress Kiesza on Wednesday. Hailing from Calgary, Canada, in just a short space of time Kiesza has already won the hearts of the world over with her 2014 Summer smash hit, ‘Hideaway’. There’s no denying Kiesza is destined for success; having also collaborated with Skrillex and Diplo’s side project Jack Ü on arguably the most underrated track of 2014, ‘Take Ü There’, expect huge things from this girl. If that wasn’t enough, she’s also a mind-blowing dancer. If you don’t believe us, check out the music video for ‘Hideaway’ below.
Following huge demand for shows this November, hard-rock band Gun are embarking on a full UK tour in 2015. The tour celebrates the 25th anniversary of their acclaimed debut “Taking On The World”, one of Classic Rock magazine’s 150 Greatest Debut Albums of All Time. Catch them at an intimate show in the Rock City Basement on Thursday, limited tickets available now!
A possible contender for gig of the year could come in the form of platinum-selling indie rockers The Vaccines on Friday. Known for their eclectic live performances and chant-along lyrics, it’s hard to argue the case against this being a night to remember for decades to come. The Vaccines now have 2 albums under their belt and although they may still seem newcomers to the scene in comparison to the likes of The Cribs and Arctic Monkeys, when they release an album they don’t half pad it out with absolute bangers; taking 2011 anthem ‘If You Wanna’ as a prime example of what to expect – upbeat, snappy and unforgettable. The band’s 3rd studio album, English Graffiti, is due for release soon.
Rescue Rooms
If that isn’t enough to rock your socks off, the following day plays host to Wolf Alice, a band so current and so adored they’re giving selfie sticks a run for their money. Hotly tipped by the biggest names in the world, it doesn’t take long to realise that these mean business; rapidly climbing up festival bills and due to release their debut in June, if there’s even one small gene in your body that has a thing for rock music, make sure you’re in Rescue Rooms on Tuesday. Check out their latest single ‘Giant Peach’ below.
The Subways wrap up the hefty sandwich of music at Rescue Rooms on Sunday. The Mic Editor Gabriella Ahmed managed to bag an email interview with Charlotte Cooper, check it out here. The Subways recently dropped their new album too, you can read all about it here.
Also on throughout the week: Karnivool – Wednesday Reef – Thursday Funeral For A Friend – Friday Scor-Zay-Zee & Chester P Hackenbush – Saturday
The Bodega
“Redefining folk” • Dazed & Confused “the lovechild of Nico and Joanna Newsom” • NYLON “brooding folk music suffused with delicate melodies” • The Telegraph
Stealth
Coventry born and Nottingham based Robin Hearn and Liam Arnold started their musical journey in 2012 with the release of their debut EP ‘Forever For Now’ via Scuba’s influential British label Hot Flush. The four tracks demonstrated the duo’s ability to combine intricate sounds with strong melodies, a lush mix of dense soundscapes and textures, providing a perfect backdrop for Liam’s haunting falsetto. The soulful vocals drew comparisons to James Blake and their hazy style of electronica, rich with ambience hinted at the astral sounds of Boards of Canada and Mount Kimbie. After winning support from Annie Mac, Huw Stephens, George Fitzgerald and Zane Lowe, the pair spent time refining their trademark sound and the result is the ‘Weird Dreamers’ EP released last month via Space + Time (Sony/RCA).
Rough Trade
Rough Trade may have two of the best gigs of the week on their hands. Both Lonelady and The Cribs are set to play intimate gigs on Monday and Tuesday respectively. The Mic contributor Kelly Beestone recently reviewed Lonelady’s new album ‘Hinterland’; you can read the incredible review here. The Mic treasurer Gabriella Ahmed was also lucky enough to interview The Cribs’ Gary Jarman ahead of their Rescue Rooms gig the other week, then got to see them live! You can read both the interview and review by clicking the respective links. Both artists release their new albums Monday, be sure to get your wristbands early for both events as they are a sure sell-out!
