Rock City
Female-fronted rock band, Halestorm, are playing Rock City on Tuesday for the second night of their UK tour. Known for their non-stop touring-often playing up to 250 shows in a year – the Pennsylvanian foursome will certainly have perfected their live show. Sure to be heard is their new song Mayhem in anticipation of their new album, Into The Wild being released this year.
Wednesday brings Bleed From Within to Rock City where they’ll be turning up the heat in the confines of the basement. Having recently released a crowd funded EP and then an album, Uprising- which reached number 13 in the UK rock chart- the show will drawing from their back catalogue of three albums. Continuing the week of heavy rock are Glamour of the Kill on Wednesday. Named by Kerrang! as “one of the UK’s brightest young hopes” the band have earned their stripes touring with Motionless In White and Heaven’s Basement and now headline their own tour with support from The Hype Theory, EOE and Ashes.
Lightening the mood a bit are Less Than Jake and Yellowcard! Fans of Less Than Jake should be thrilled as they’re not only serving up their first full-length in five years, but—after more than two decades together—are also embracing a total back to basics approach. result of their old school approach is the old school sound of See The Light, created without any external meddling from corporate lackeys. They’re sharing the stage with pop-punk veterans, Yellowcard, who are sure to bang out some Hey! Hey! Hey! classics like Ocean Avenue
Rescue Rooms
Coming to Rescue Rooms on Wednesday are Room 94; Following on from the success of their Top 40 Debut Album ‘No Strings Attached’ Room 94 are back and are bigger and bolder than ever. Their 2015 11-date ‘Dirty Dancing’ tour will start in Oxford on the 28th of February and run up until they play London’s O2 Academy Islington on the 13th March.
Friday brings To Kill A King to Rescue Rooms. Leeds-born, the London-based indie pop outfit formed in 2009 around the talents of Ralph Pelleymounter, Ian Dudfield, Josh Platman, John Willoughby, and Ben Jackson. Steeped in both the rural folk aesthetic of Mumford & Sons and Laura Marling, and the orchestral arena rock leanings of Frightened Rabbit and the National, the band inked a deal with the Communion label and released its first single, Fictional State, in May 2011 followed six months later by the EP My Crooked Saint. There’s no better way to finish off a busy week than with such a calming gig.
Anyone who devoted their childhood to watching WWE will be excited for Chris Jericho’s band, Fozzy, to grace the stage on Saturday night to round off an eclectic week of music. Their first few releases still had Fozzy playing covers but with adopted stage names and a backstory written for the movies. When you have such high-energy performers like Ward and Jericho – it still is debatably on who jumps higher, Ward on stage with his guitar or Jericho in the ring – creating a ‘for fun’ band was easy, however Ward and Jericho aren’t just entertainers. Ward is probably one of the greatest and unjustly so, underrated riffers in rock and metal today. Jericho singing ability and overall passion for music makes one wonder just how he is able to find the time to excel in pretty much everything he does. Head down to join in the chaos!
Bodega
Kicking off the week of music at Bodega on Monday are English duo, Aquilo, playing a short run of dates across the UK. Their music has been described as “soft, calm electro-pop” and “a ravishingly refined sort of dreamily sad electronica” so brings a welcomed change from the heavy metal dominating the other venues this week. Tuesday brings Max Jury, a singer-songwriter from Des Moines, Iowa. A love of great American songwriting from the likes of Bob Dylan, Gram Parsons & Paul Simon has helped him hone and craft his own skill. An undeniable talent, 21 year-old Max Jury is sure to establish himself as an American great in his own right.
Zun Zun Egui formed in Bristol in late 2008 – Mauritian guitarist and singer Kushal Gaya met and started making music with Japanese keyboard player Yoshino Shigihara after they had both moved to the UK. Initially they started playing with a large number of musicians but a core ZZE group formed round the pair along with bassist Luke Mosse and drummer Matt Jones. Yoshino came up with their name after seeing the term Zun Zun Egui on a trip to the Basque Country and realising that it sounded exactly like the Japanese words for “Fast Fast Weird”. (They would later find out it was Basque for a group of trees.) A love for experimentation, free jazz, fusion, DIY culture, throwing parties and playing wild shows was the glue that bonded the outfit together. This is sure to be a mental gig to liven up the midweek blues.
The Qemists are sure to raise the roof with their electronic music this Friday. Having just finished a short run across Europe supporting nu-metal stalwarts Korn, the Brighton electro trio will hit the road for their Warrior Sound tour between March 4 and 14 with the Algorithm providing support.
