Rock City
Fearless Vampire Killers may have postponed their gig this Tuesday but that’s not to say that there still won’t be an amazing line-up at Rock City this week! Notably missing from the speakers of this venue are indie bands but for the mosh-pit veterans amongst you, you certainly won’t be disappointed; Heavy metal titans Black Label Society are set to grace our shores on Wednesday in support of their 2014 album ‘Catacombs of the Black Vatican’. Fresh from announcing a summer appearance at Download Festival’s main stage the band will be playing songs from their whopping nine (yes, nine) album career dating back to the late nineties. Sure to be a sweaty gig the band will no doubt be playing some of their new bangers, like this one on Wednesday:
If your ear-drums survive and you return home relatively unscathed then why not return Thursday – this time to the Basement- to see Incite, the new thrash metal monsters on the scene. Being dubbed by Revolver as ‘thrash that’s hard to refuse/resist’ the ground of this intimate space is sure to shake as they play songs from their 2014 album Up In Hell.
May as well start revising the words from now!
Also playing this week are two older bands: Snot (don’t try Googling them) perform ‘Get Some’ in it’s entirety to a Rock City crowd on Tuesday and The Jesus and Mary Chain polish the week off with a set on Sunday.
Rescue Rooms
Rescue rooms has an incredibly eclectic mix of acts this week; whether it’s Kate Tempest‘s spoken word on Tuesday, Gus G‘s metal guitar playing on Friday or brilliant new club night Yeah Yeah & What’s dose of grime, there truly is something for everyone. Kate Tempest, born and bred in South-East London, started out as a rapper, toured the spoken word circuit for a number of years, and now works as a poet and playwright too. Her epic poem Brand New Ancients won both the Ted Hughes Prize for innovation in poetry and a Herald Angel Award. It is published by Picador and is touring nationwide until April 2014. After a sell out show at St Anne’s Warehouse, Brooklyn, Brand New Ancients received a rave review in the New York Times and came to international attention. Fresh from this new found success, catch Kate as she embarks on her very own headline tour! See all the projects she’s involved in here: http://www.katetempest.co.uk/projects
Friday sees a quick turn-around for Rescue Rooms, first it plays host to Gus G who has spent the past decade quietly affirming his place as one of metal’s reigning guitar virtuosos. He has recorded more than a dozen studio albums, performed around the world as a member of acts ranging from Arch Enemy and Dream Evil to his own band Firewind, and has been Ozzy Osbourne’s guitarist since being personally handpicked by the heavy metal legend in August 2009. Now, with the release of his first-ever solo album ‘I Am The Fire’ on Century Media Records, the fleet-fingered Greek fret-shredder will embark on the next chapter of his history-shaping career.
The Bodega
Best of the Rest
Gig or no gig, there’s always time to chow down at Spanky’s, especially on a Tuesday when it’s 2-for-1 burgers that even cater for vegetarians and vegans. Having been in Nottingham on NYE to blow away the crowds of Dollop, Hannah Wants is back to play at Stealth, a gig that sold out so fast that it’s a shame that the gig is in the smaller venue that is Stealth. For those of you who weren’t lucky enough to snap up a ticket, here’s a mixtape to keep you going:
Got a onesie you’re dying to show off to the world? Hide the post-pancake day food baby in your finest onesie and head to The Maze on Mansfield Road for a Onesie party on Tuesday where the best dressed will even win a prize!
No Tomorrow also announced their first acts this week with John Newman and Jessie Ware headlining. Detonate followed swiftly behind announcing their first headliner tonight and it’s none other than the brilliant Wilkinson; his new single with TC was released early, you can treat your ears here:
Looks like this festival season is set to be a great one!
‘Til next time.
