Highlights: “Monkey Man” & the guy overcome with so much excitement he simply had to charge the stage and hand the band an ‘I Love You’ note (received with a smile from Toots himself).
Toots and the Maytals, undoubtedly one of the most influential reggae bands of all time, graced the stage of Rock City this October as part of their 2018 UK tour, and to say it was something special would be an understatement! Toots and the Maytals formed in 1961 but proved in one night that they have absolutely still got it.
The first half of the gig saw Frederick ‘Toots’ Hibbert lead the Maytals through their new 2017 album ‘Reggae Time.’ The album is a lot more chilled than some of their previous greats, and so was greeted with a steady stream of foot tapping and head bobbing (a truly relaxed atmosphere). However, in the second half of the gig, Toots and the Maytals lined up the hits that half the die-hard fans in the crowd were clearly waiting for. The band gave 100% and in response the crowd gave back 110% to greats like “Funky Kingston“, “Monkey Man” and “Pressure Drop“. The result was spectacular and showed what can only be achieved from a band with as much experience as this.
