I suppose you could argue that this song was the Blurred Lines of its day, being banned from a number of radio stations due to it’s ‘suggestive lyrics’, Wake Up Little Susie by The Everly Brothers still managed to get the duo their first US number one back in 1957.
Still, it’s not quite got the lyrical content of Robin Thicke and I’m pretty sure there was never any half-naked women running about the place whenever this was performed, yet it was yet another track Banned in Boston for it’s objectionable content. This prudish opinion wasn’t adopted by the whole of the US, mind, and so the song still made its way to being one of the most iconic from the fifties.
In reality the song is a perfectly innocent story of taking a girl to the drive-in movies but the film being so dull they fall asleep ’til 4am, leaving them worried about how their friends and family will be “ooh la la”-ing about the whole thing. Not quite as scandalous in 2013, I’ll give you that, but it’s a sweet and fun song of smooth, harmonic fifties pop that is always a good listen. Having being named one of the best songs of all time by Rolling Stone magazine and even covered by the likes of Alvin and the Chipmunks back in 1989 (I know right), this is a classic high school gem to always be remembered.
