A sell-out crowd in Rock City bouncing round to Liam Fray blasting out The Courteeners’ newest tracks mixed together with crowd classics; could you get a better Tuesday night? Rapturous applause from the band’s adoring fans that is sure to have rivalled any reception in Nottingham this year greeted the Manchester band as they made their way to the stage. The electrifying crowd all fixated on the stage… until the first chord was struck and the first lyric belted out by lead singer, Liam Fray, the whole venue erupted in a mesmerising 3 minutes of ‘Are You In Love With A Notion?’. The whole venue was gripped as the opening song was followed by a mixture of tracks from previous albums and the latest one. The reaction which met the songs from the band’s latest album, ‘Mapping The Rendezvous’ shows just why The Courteeners are the self-proclaimed biggest underground band in the country and why their fan base continues to grow year on year. Particular love from the new album appeared to be directed towards ‘Modern Love‘, ‘The 17th’ and ‘The Dilettante’. Fray, majestic as ever, was superbly backed up by his fellow band members, and the 4-piece continued to have the crowd rocking all the way until Liam’s 3 song acoustic set. ‘De La Salle’ was followed on by ‘Please Don’t’ from the band’s first album ‘St. Jude’ and the acoustic section was brilliantly wrapped up with the B-side, ‘Smiths Disco’. Numerous 12ft nothing’s adorned the crowd throughout the gig but even more so during the slow acoustic songs sung out effortlessly by Fray, as fans got the best seat in the house for a chorus or two. The night was then wrapped up with arguably the bands two most notable songs, ‘Not Nineteen Forever’ and ‘What Took You So Long’, and in typical Courteeners fashion the band classily thanked each and every one of those in attendance for coming out and supporting them. 10 years on from their formation, the band continue to produce truly outstanding new music, and with many songs having incredibly relatable lyrics it makes it nigh on impossible to dislike them and not get caught up in the buzz The Courteeners seem to take wherever they go. Those lucky to be in attendance on Tuesday night and see one of the biggest Northern bands in recent times, will have certainly not been disappointed as once again the band produced a special night with an amazing atmosphere.
