The beginning of this academic year, I returned to Nottingham, having spent a year away from its pubs, clubs and music scene. Other priorities had prevented me seeing any live music in the last year, so I was very keen to open up a gig-guide website and see who was playing in Notts this term. Scrolling down list of gigs I was largely disappointed with myself. Everyone was “they just rip off so and so band”, or “I saw them a few years ago when they were at their best”, or “Would I enjoy electronica when it’s not coming from my headphones whilst I’m studying?”
I felt like my Dad….. until I saw “Reel Big Fish” on the gig guide. I don’t usually listen to this band. But it’s always a laugh when they’re played at parties. And most importantly, their fans LOVE them! Half the crowd will love them and bounce around with happiness. The other half of the crowd will find their happy bouncing so contagious, they’ll join in, and everyone will have a good time like people tend to at Ska gigs.
Strangely enough, my chosen solution to escape my “Old man gigger rut”, is to see a band who’s biggest hits, “Beer”, and “Sell Out”, were released when I was 3 years old. Let’s see if it works…………
You can catch Reel Big Fish on Sunday 25th October @ Nottingham Rescue Rooms
