Preview: End Of The Road 2023

Freya Martin previews what we can expect from End Of The Road festival this year. With many legends and ones-to-be gracing its stages, this goodbye-to-summer-fest might be worth the journey.

Nestled deep in the forests of the mysterious Westcountry, you’ll find a haven of psychedelia, indie rock, post-punk, experimental electronica and everything in between. End Of The Road festival is held at the end of the festival season, a last hurrah in a muddy field before the summer draws to a close. Having hosted faultless line-ups consistently year on year, from Stereolab to Little Simz to Pixies to Hot Chip, this year is no different for fans of the very best in alternative music. The acts span from cult legends to up-and-coming buzz bands, the latter including Lime Garden, PVA, caroline and Nottingham’s very own Divorce. This year’s headliners, and indeed the entire line-up, boast legend status, starting with leftfield Aussies King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard and psychedelic dance heavyweights Unknown Mortal Orchestra, whilst further down the bill sees Greentea Peng, Ezra Furman, Angel Olsen and Kokoroko rubbing shoulders. Often in the realm of the infamous 6 Music Dad, End Of The Road also acts as a beacon for acts cutting their teeth in the alternative music and festival scene, putting a spotlight on emerging talent via stages curated by industry organisations such as music magazine Loud & Quiet. Beyond the music, there are comedy acts, literature Q+As and film to be consumed in the twisting paths of the forest, while the main arena boasts vintage shops, food stalls and activities galore – be sure to stop by the whittling stand to carve yourself a wooden spoon (you won’t regret it). End Of The Road is aptly named: it's a melting pot of musical talent at the end of the summer and pretty much the end of the country, but the journey is worth it for the total immersion in the music, creativity and nature that this beautiful festival provides.
