Pierce the Veil vs Sleeping With Sirens @ Rock City, 07/04/15

Never before have I seen the queue line go round the block for Rock City, nor have I seen teenage fan girls get excited over quite such small things, such as their screaming when the bouncers started letting people in. But this was to be expected, two very popular bands were playing, to say I wasn’t also excited would be a lie.

But before the main acts of the night, ISSUES attempted to get the crowd warmed up. I feel a bit sorry for them though as every time they tried to open a mosh pit only a couple people joined in, as everyone else seemed to be saving their energy for later.

During the interval the crowd was reluctant to move, knowing that getting a space near the front would be a near impossible feat if they were to abandon their progress. Making the wait more intense, a curtain was put across the stage whilst Pierce the Veil set up and did their sound check. To draw out the intensity once more before silhouettes of each band member appear whilst playing ‘May These Noises Startle You In Your Sleep Tonight,’ before the curtain fell in the chaotic beginning of ‘Hell Above.’ This is the first time I’ve ever had an opportunity to crowd surf in a gig and let me say: If you haven’t done it you should try it! It was much more pleasant than I expected it to be with the most painful bit being when someone grabbed my nipple.

After a couple fairly intense moshing songs the atmosphere calmed down, with the middle of the set being an acoustic version of ‘I’m Low on Gas and You Need a Jacket,’ sung and played by Vic Fuentes. After the first verse he stopped playing but the entire room carried on singing and you could see that it meant a lot to him. Like every Pierce the Veil gig where Kellin Quinn was also present, they ended with ‘King for a Day,’ which made the earlier chaos seem quite civilized in comparison. It was a good thing there was a long interval following it…

Following a similar theme to Pierce the Veil, Sleeping with Sirens also started with energetic songs such as ‘Kick Me’ from their new album (which I think is their best yet), before slowing down to some acoustic songs. For the encore they played ‘If You Can’t Hang’ which again had the room chanting out the chorus too. I know I probably say this every time, but I think this is the best gig I’ve been to yet, Rock City just doesn’t seem to be able to let down!
