Pale Waves returned to Nottingham on Tuesday night after they’d previously played an incredibly packed out set at this year’s Dot to Dot festival. Having only just released their debut album “My Mind Makes Noises” a couple of weeks ago, the Manchester four-piece have exploded onto the music scene, helped by The 1975’s Matt Healy, and don’t look to be slowing down any time soon.
Starting the night off were angsty indie rock band- King Nun. They took a little while to settle into their music but after their self-proclaimed favourite song “Sponge” they relaxed, and their set was a lot more enjoyable. Although, lead singer Theo did announce that he’s been compared to The Arctic Monkeys before, and while they have a lot of potential, I don’t think they’re there yet.

Swimming Girls performed next, and immediately it was clear that they were an obvious choice to support Pale Waves. Their dream-pop sound was of a very similar vibe to Pale Waves and front-woman Vanessa added to the girl power of the night. ‘Back of Your Car’ got everybody singing along and by the time Swimming Girls finished, the crowd was warmed up and awaiting the main event.

The build up to Pale Waves seemed to last forever, with the music slowly getting louder and louder before finally they walked on and launched straight in with ‘Television Romance’. They played nearly every song from their debut album including ‘Eighteen’ and ‘Come in Close’ and kept the crowd jumping and singing along all night. For a change of pace, they played ‘She’ which calmed everybody down temporarily, but the energy was soon picked back up again. Almost too soon, the set was done but again, the music slowly started to get louder and louder with a build up identical to the opening of the show. Unfortunately, though, we weren’t in store for another hour of catchy indie-pop hits and the night finished with ‘There’s a Honey’
Pale Waves have already said that they are working on a new EP and will soon be embarking on their European and then North America tour. They are also going to be supporting The 1975 on their UK and Ireland tour next year. With so many exciting things lined up and having already achieved so much in such a short time, you can tell that Pale Waves are going to continue to grow and will be headlining bigger venues themselves in the future.
