Straight off of New Zealand’s newest pop sensation’s debut studio album, Pure Heroine, Team has hit the top ten on iTunes, following on from her number one single, Royals. It was released on September 13th, 2014 and gained vast interest due to the artist’s credibility and versatility which began to flourish from the very first single released off her album.
Lorde fails to disappoint as she continues to honour her edgy yet soulful sound, accompanied by an expectedly obscure music video. Although the song is one of the most upbeat on the album, the eerie sound in her voice is never masked by the simple, yet fast paced beat throughout the song. The haunting aura of the seventeen year-old’s music has been compared to that of Lana Del Rey and artists alike. However, she succeeds in keeping the theme of her music very different from that of other young artists such as Lana Del Rey or Taylor Swift; Lorde’s outlook on what she believes youngsters should be hearing about in music is not about relationships and unhealthy lustrous obsessions. Instead, she focuses on her hometown and celebrates her youth. This gains Lorde the capacity to be listened to as the breath of fresh air that she is, when it comes to our current generation of music.
But, is this pop princess just another case of style over substance? Absolutely not. The young artist has already been critically acclaimed, not just for her vocal delivery, but also for her unique musical style and quality of lyrical content. ‘Team’ is no different. ‘We live in cities you’ll never see on screen, not very pretty but we sure know how to run things.’ In the song, the young artist delves into a deep illustrative depiction of her youth in a small town in New Zealand and by emphasising how little she had, now allows herself to be seen in a very glamorous light. The recent pop icon has yet again released a single that is fun without being silly, and youthful without being immature, and is a definite must-listen.
