In his interview for The Mic’s Freshers Issue, Dot told us that Rescue Rooms was his favourite venue in Nottingham. So, it was fitting that it played host to the band on their return to the city where it all started for them.
Since leaving university, the band have really taken off. This summer was crammed with festival appearances, debut album If You Wait has received critical acclaim, and they had just got back from touring America before embarking on this tour of the UK.
It’s not often that a crowd is completely silenced, at most gigs you get the odd fool shouting or (it pains me to use this word) bantering between songs, but after opening with Hey Now – the first track on the album – the sold out venue was completely silent. It seems we were all in awe of the stunning voice that Hannah possesses, which was strong, powerful and held up throughout.
Let’s not take anything away from the guys though, who played with a sense of accomplishment. Dot hopped around from keys, to drums, to djembe, while Dan quietly played his guitar over on the other side of the stage.
The set comprised of album tracks, and Darling Are You Gonna Leave Me, from their Metal & Dust EP. The highlights were probably Wasting My Young Years, which was sandwiched in the middle, and their cover of Kavinsky’s Nightcall – the track from everyone’s favourite Ryan Gosling movie. Strong also stood out, but really, at the end of the day, I think Hannah could have probably sung anything and held the crowd’s attention.
London Grammar are probably sick of reading this about themselves, but the future looks bright for them, and I’m looking forward to see what comes next.
