The Mic's Megan-Rose Greener was lucky enough to catch Little Simz's intimate set at Nottingham's Rough Trade; she shares her thoughts.
Little Simz is rapidly establishing herself as a large-venue artist, due to play a sold-out Rock City gig later this year. If response to her new album is anything to go by, it’s possible she’ll progress to arena-level in the coming months or years. That’s why to see her in a packed Rough Trade on a Sunday afternoon was something special.
"A truly intimate affair"
The gig was arranged to promote her new album, ‘Sometimes I Might Be Introvert’, so it is not surprising that her setlist consisted mostly of songs from this album. Despite only being released this year, however, the entire crowd seemed to know every word. The atmosphere was electric, with Little Simz bouncing of the crowd and working them throughout every song. Her love for what she does was clear throughout the entire set, especially when she brought on stage some of her own family to join in the show; a truly intimate affair. Little Simz’s new album is extremely personal, which meant the layout of this show complemented it completely.
That being said, the highlight of the show was probably Little Simz coming off stage and into the crowd for what is arguably her most successful song; 101 FM. Every member of the audience went crazy. Simply put, Little Simz gave a stand-out performance in an intimate venue to a crowd of her biggest fans. I expect everyone there will follow her onto bigger things and larger venues very soon.
