Live at Leeds in the City 2023 provides us with a rich and exciting lineup, over the years, it has earned a reputation for providing a platform for up-and-coming musicians to perform and gain exposure. Here’s who Olivia Hannant is looking forward to catching this Saturday across the city.
The Last Dinner Party
One of this year’s headliners, the five piece knows how to put on a live show with the group gaining their traction purely from a recording of their live show which is doused in silks and nuance. I will be running over to Leeds Beckett to catch these guys and join in on the ritual, hopefully dressed to the nines as the band have put out an optional dress code of ‘The Language of Flowers’ and ‘Victoriana’ and who doesn’t enjoy dressing up?
For fans of Ethel Cain, Boygenius, Wet Leg
Maruja
Manchester’s Maruja will offer an eclectic mix of genres, blending elements of psychedelia, jazz, and punk, which should make for an intriguing and dynamic experience. After catching them at Nottingham’s Dot to Dot this year I am hoping they will continue to deliver, their unique sound is really something special and looking forward to hearing their latest EP, born out of improvisation sessions live.
For fans of Squid, Opus Kink, The Murder Capital
Lime Garden
Lime Garden, a band hailing from Brighton, appears to be making waves in the alternative music scene with their distinctive and genre-blurring style. Their ability to seamlessly transition between various music genres, including indie, surf, and disco, demonstrates their versatility and willingness to experiment with different sounds. I am yet to see these guys live but definitely looking forward to it.
For fans of Prima queen, English Teacher, Sorry
Matilda Mann
Matilda Mann, despite having a relatively short career in music, has already made a significant impact in the British music scene. Her music is characterized by soft vocals, the use of gentle guitars, and candid lyrics. Also looking forward to hearing songs off Matilda’s new EP ‘You look like you can’t swim’. I love more chilled out sets, this I will be looking forward to as a lull in my day.
For fans of Laura Marling, Big Thief, Matt Maltese
Cowboyy
Cowboyy, a quartet from the south coast, has been making a significant impact on the music scene, particularly in London and the UK. Their music is characterized by intricate math riffs, which have gained them a reputation for their technical prowess and unique sound. I’ve heard high praise about this four piece so am looking forward to seeing if they live up to their ever evolving reputation.
For fans of splint, Fat dog
Overall, I’m really looking forward to seeing some of the venues Leeds has to offer along with a day packed full of live music across genres and to see some artists I’ve been waiting to see for a while!
