Leon Bridges brought his jazzy soul music and effortlessly smooth voice to the main stage at Rock City.
Supporting Leon was fellow vocalist Amber Mark, she did a brilliant job of warming up the audience with her strong soul voice and R&B sounds. Her tunes were some great slow jam dance songs that the audience easily got behind; swaying, dancing and clapping along.
Leon Bridges was met with a warm response, opening up with his latest single “If It Feels Good (Then It Must Be)” a catchy, feel good track which had everyone at Rock City jamming along with him. Leon was accompanied on stage by his back up vocalists and band, who impressively were able to switch instruments without a second blink. One of the highlights of the show was when each member of the band was given their individual moment to shine – taking it in turns to do what they do best. The guitarist definitely took his moment to shine, giving an amazing little rendition of Ozzy Ozbourne’s “Crazy Train”.
One thing is for sure, Leon Bridges needs to start teaching dance lessons. He was spinning around, gliding across the stage with such ease and style. His overall showmanship was incredible, you could tell that he really just loves performing his music. ‘Smooth’ would be the perfect word I’d use to describe Leon in his performance, voice, and music overall. With a combination of upbeat jazzy tunes such as “Bad Bad News” and some slower songs, the gig always felt fresh and interesting.
I have to admit though, it was painfully obvious how single I was, listening to such beautiful songs such as ‘Beyond’, surrounded by adoring couples – compliments to how powerful the music was though. The audience in general was a complete mix of different shapes and sizes, completely ranging in ages and styles.
Of course, Leon returned to the stage for an encore, in which he opened back up with a stunning performance of ‘River’, in which his female backup singer, Brittni Jessie joined him front and center stage. They both put on a heartwarming performance which was truly captivating. There’s something frankly captivating about two vocalists singing on stage, with nothing but a guitar to accompany them. ‘Mississippi Kisses’ closed the show on a more energetic note, with the rest of the band returning to the stage.
All in all, I left Rock City with a much deeper respect and appreciation for Leon Bridges and his music after seeing him perform live. If you haven’t already, please do yourself a favor and check out the stunning and soulful music of Leon Bridges.
