Jake Bugg – ‘Slumville Sunrise’ Single Review

Jake Bugg’s sudden rise to stardom is cemented with his new single ‘Slumville Sunrise’ and will inevitably gain him a new wave of followers to add to his already booming fan base.

His soulful voice teamed with candid, relatable lyrics make his new track as captivating as previous hits such as ‘ Two Fingers’ and again draw parallels between the storytelling style of his own lyrics and those of the great Bob Dylan. ‘Slumville Sunrise’ is somewhat faster paced than what we have previously seen from Jake; a heavy drum beat and staccato electric guitar riff create more of a rock than folky feel to the song, leaving you desperate to dance like Mick Jagger.

However, his characteristic voice is hard to obscure and the swooning choruses we have come to know and love are still very evident on this latest single too. Lyrics such as ‘This place is just not for me I say it all the time.

‘My friends they just ignore me.’ Show he is still finding inspiration from his childhood in Nottingham and the insights he provides into his life through his lyrics are amazingly profound for a 19 year old. It may take a few more listens to grasp the depth of the lyrics and to really get hooked into the song but I guarantee within a week you will have this one on repeat.

For all the Jake Bugg fans out there this is sure to satisfy your cravings for new material and for anyone yet to hear his immense talent, this single is a perfect opportunity to get your mind blown by his brilliant honesty and genius riffs; proving once and for all he is Nottingham’s, and indeed England’s, finest songwriter of the day.

‘Slumville Sunrise’ is his second release from the new album ‘Shangri La’ that is out on 18th November and I for one cannot wait to hear what else this talented young man has in store for us.
