We met up with new band, Hoodwinker for a chat ahead of the UNICEF x The Mic Live gig on the 30th November!
Firstly, what are your roles in the band? So we have Will who sings and plays guitar, Sam who is on drums, Lukas who plays bass and Harry who plays guitar and does backing vocals. This is our first gig as Hoodwinker so we are really excited to play.
Tell us about your performing history – you used to be in Sweet Malaise (ex pres of The Mic)
We formed as Will’s solo project (Cosmic Will) developed. We (Will, Lukas and Sam) were playing a band called Sweet Malaise for 3 years and then some of our band members graduated. So we teamed up with Harry through song writing society and we’ve been playing our own songs as a band since.
What’s the story behind your name? Hoodwinker is also the name of a song by Enter Shikari, but we thought it was a great name that was quite fun but also dark at the same time (like our old band’s name Sweet Malaise I guess) and it fits well with the music we play.
How would you describe your music? Broadly alternative rock and all relevant sub-genres of that, really. We listen to a lot of different music and are influenced by and merge post-rock, psychedelics and post-hardcore too!
Who are your biggest influences? Our main influences are big bands like Radiohead, Tame Impala, Queens of the Stone Age, Mogwai and Wolf Alice who I’m (Will) seeing in Nottingham soon.
What’s the best gig you’ve been to in Nottingham? Will: I saw a band called Thrice at Rock City, they were really good. They’re a bit like Radiohead but from California and heavier.
Sam: The Cribs at Rescue Rooms, it was a small promo tour and I was incredibly sweaty after it!
What are your ambitions for the future? Hopefully we will be playing some big gigs by the end of the academic year. We’re also planning to record and EP and have it done early next year. In the short term, we’re going to do some self-produced singles.
And finally, if you could have written any song, what would it be? Will: Any of the Game of Thrones songs from the original soundtrack. The song when Cersei blows up the sept is a favourite of mine.
