Thomas Headon is one of the hottest names in indie-pop at the moment, and at this year’s Live at Leeds festival, Jon Hague managed to catch up with him to discuss his North American co-headline tour with Alfie Templeman, his love of pop music and much more!
Me: Is this your first time at Live at Leeds?
Thomas: This is my first time at Live at Leeds, but not my first time in Leeds. I love Leeds, I’m excited!
Me: Do you prefer indoor festivals or outdoor festivals?
Thomas: Outdoor festivals are fun, they’re real festival vibes, playing a tent is sick. But indoor ones are just better for everyone, ‘cos it’s like being at a real gig. I’m gonna go for outdoor though for the festival vibes.
Me: Which artists are your best friends at the moment?
Thomas: Me and Alfie Templeman are really good friends, I keep seeing Declan McKenna at festivals too, but Alfie’s probably my best mate.
Me: How did you feel about UrbanAngel1999 being on Heartstopper?
Thomas: It was sick! I actually didn’t know it was going to be on it, I just opened Twitter one day and people were freaking out about it being on Heartstopper! It’s dope to have one of your songs in a TV show, but also Heartstopper is a really good TV show to be in, in terms of everything that it’s about, it was really sweet that they used my song.
Me: In your live shows you like playing the more fast-paced stuff, is there a reason why you don’t like playing the ballads?
Thomas: They’re just slow, I’ll play them at my headline shows. It’s just more fun to play faster songs.
Me: Have you got any plans to play in Nottingham soon?
Thomas: I should, maybe I should do a one-night-only in Nottingham!
Me: You quite often play a Taylor Swift cover in your sets, what’s the reasoning behind that?
Thomas: It’s just the best song ever! I love doing covers, and Taylor Swift’s incredible, it’s just non-stop hits! I’m very excited about the upcoming album.
Me: Who else are you listening to at the moment?
Thomas: The Harry Styles album is one of my favourite albums of the year, the new Paramore track is constantly in my head. I still listen to Busted and McFly, I listen to a lot of old stuff!
Me: Are you excited about your upcoming co-headline tour with Alfie Templeman?
Thomas: I’m so excited, I love him! The US is really fun to play in, and also we’re in a bus together, so that is just going to be a whirlwind of partying!
Quickfire Questions
Me: UK or Australia?
Thomas: Australia’s a beach country and the weather’s great so I kind of have to say Australia! And also, my family is there. But I love living in the UK.
Me: Taylor Swift or Harry Styles?
Thomas: Umm… Harry. Sorry, Taylor.
Me: Lidl or Aldi?
Thomas: Aldi. I’ve never been to Lidl.
Me: What’s the best gig you’ve been to?
Thomas: Coldplay, by far. The best show ever.
Me: The Strokes or Arctic Monkeys?
Thomas: The Strokes
Me: If you were a fruit, which fruit would you be and why?
Thomas: Great question. Apples are bitter, and I enjoy that. They’re crunchy, but also juicy. But I think for me I’d probably be a banana. In high school my Mum went away for 6 months on a work thing, and I had to make my lunch every day. And I would purely just eat a banana for breakfast, recess and lunch every day, then I’d come home from school and have a banana. And then the doctor was like “You have so much potassium, you are going to die.” You are what you eat, so I would literally be a banana.
Thank you very much to Thomas Headon for his time!
