At Boardmasters festival Benedict Watson had the pleasure of interviewing the charismatic Lime Cordiale, a successful Australian indie-rock band who are trying to replicate their Australian success in the UK!
Q: How are you feeling about tonight’s set?
A: Yeah feeling really good, it’s a beautiful day! We’re playing on the cliff edge and there’s not much wind, last year they cancelled the stage due to wind because the stage could’ve fallen over the edge. That would be a good way to go actually! How did Lime Cordiale die? Oh their stage fell over the cliff!
Q: Are you based in the UK or Australia?
A: We’ve moved to the UK for 6 months, but going back to Australia for the Australian summer, so we’re basically just skipping winter!
Q: How do you feel about the Australian music scene and how difficult do you think it is for Australian bands to break into the UK?
A: I think the Australian music scene is world-class! I think it’s quite similar to the UK, there’s a good crossover, we have the same taste! If you walk into a pub in the UK and a band’s playing, they’re often pretty good, and the same in Australia, if you’re wandering down the main strips and there’s a band playing, you should probably go inside! There’s some real good undiscovered stuff.
Q: Who are your main inspirations as a band?
A: A lot of people say that they feel a lot of Arctic Monkeys in our music, maybe some Paolo Nutini. Kings of Leon and The Strokes are also big inspirations for us.
Q: What is your favourite Lime Cordiale song and why?
A: It’s hard to like your own music, normally when you release new music you have a break from that song for a while. I’m still pretty keen on our new single Country Club, it’s pretty wacky.
Q: Are you looking forward to playing Rescue Rooms in Nottingham this winter?
A: Definitely! It really surprises us that people want to buy tickets to our shows on the other side of the world. It’s a bit weird for us, like how did you get onto our music? Spotify can be really good for getting bands’ music across the other side of the world.
Q: You mentioned new single Country Club, is that part of an upcoming album?
A: Yeah definitely, we’re just finishing off the last bit of toppings on our next album!
Quickfire:
Q: The Strokes or Arctic Monkeys
A: The Strokes
Q: Pineapple on pizza, yes or no?
A: Absolutely! We even have beetroot on burgers in Australia!
Q: DMAs or Gang of Youths?
A: DMAs, you’re asking some competitive questions though for an Australian band, might cause some rivalries!
Q: McDonald’s or KFC?
A: Neither, I’m vegetarian and they don’t have good vegetarian options.
Q: What is the best gig you’ve been to?
A: We saw Tame Impala just before lockdown, the first time I saw The Strokes I was pretty stoked too.
Q: If you were a fruit, which fruit would you be?
A: Papaya! It’s my favourite fruit, it’s a beautiful colour, it tastes a bit funky, ooh it’s good!
Thank you very much to Lime Cordiale for taking the time to do the interview!
