I had no idea. To be fair to him, his parents did call him ‘Reginald Kenneth Dwight’, which to be honest seems a lot more fitting but he went ahead and changed his name later to Elton Hercules John anyway. Why not? Fuck It.
But lets not make fun, after all, he’s been pretty successful with it. Hercules (as he will be known for the purpose of this article) is one of the most successful artists of all time. He has sold over 250 Milllion albums and 33 million copies of his 1997 single ‘Candle in the Wind’ worldwide in his career.
Not impressed yet? okay – Hercules became a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1996, and received a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II for “services to music and charitable services” in 1998. What have you done today?
In 2008, Billboard magazine ranked him as the most successful male solo artist on “The Billboard Hot 100 Top All-Time Artists” Hercules came third overall, behind only The Beatles and Madonna. Not bad.
But its not all rose tinted glasses. In early July this year, this demi-god, son of Zeus, succumbed to his mortal side as a spokesperson announced the legend was suffering with severe appendicitis and had to cancel his upcoming July shows. He is however set to return to play the remaining shows starting in early September including Bestival.
Bestival HQ was understandably proud to announce that the iconic Rocket Man himself Elton John is making his way to join us this September, for what will be his first ever UK festival performance. He will be headlining the main stage (obviously) on the sunday night, closing the show is his very unique and timeless style.
This is a real chance to see one of the worlds greatest ever artists. Going to Bestival would be worth it just to see Hercules – never mind the hundred of other world class acts. In 50 years time you can tell your Grandkids that you saw Elton John Live, and they’ll be like, “Who? Shut up Grandad.” But you’ll know.
