Xylaroo‘s latest single ‘Danger’ comes as the charming Chant sisters, Holly and Coco, prepare to embark as Special Guests on their second UK jaunt with exuberant everyman Matt Berry and his faithful band The Maypoles this Autumn (full listings below).
It is the fourth single to be taken from the pair’s greatly anticipated 2016 debut studio album ‘Sweetooth’ – which will be released via Sunday Best / PIAS to coincide with the tour.
Taking a walk on the wild side, ‘Danger’ is a rousing alt-country anthem ready in waiting that sees the sisters bind their trademark harmonies with instrumentation simmering in a gauzy feedback. With lyrics brimming with all the confidence and conscience we have come to expect, the pair channel their literary knowledge and songwriting sensibilities to make an intelligent and staunch stance against racism.
Speaking about the track, Xylaroo said:
“Danger was influenced by watching stories on the news about police brutality and the killing of black youths. The chorus strange fruit is obviously a reference to the song and poem “Strange Fruit,” a protest against lynchings in the 30’s. We also refer to Maya Angelou’s “I know why the caged bird sings” which we both read at school. Throughout the song we use the allegory of the wind and the tree to convey the more subtle forms of modern racism that permeate society today.
“These incidences are not isolated from society, strange outcomes come from strange beginnings. Beneath such random acts of violence is a system and a structure that we all bend to in some way or another.” Gaining rave reviews and numerous plays across national radio in 2016 with support from Steve Lamacq (BBC 6Music), John Kennedy (Radio X) and Lauren Laverne (BBC 6Music); plus playlistings on Virgin Radio and Amazing radio; and not to mention sensational sessions and interviews with Edith Bowman (Virgin Radio), Dermot O’Leary show (BBC Radio 2), and Loose Ends (BBC Radio 4); it has been an unforgettable year for the girls. Since their first tour with Matt Berry last year, the the pair have had a hectic schedule honing their live performances on the road. With a bar-setting headline set on the BBC Introducing stage at Latitude Festival this summer, winning over new audiences with Will Varley across the UK and most recently playing to stadiums and arenas on tour as special guests to Mika across Europe (17 dates, 7 countries and an estimated 90,000 fans), all before festival igniting sets at Camp Bestival mainstage, Boardmasters and Bestival this September; the last 12 months have been something of a whirlwind.
With a debut album now to their name and a matured and accomplished live set raring to go, Xylaroo are set to wow as they rejoin Matt Berry & The Maypoles this Autumn. Tour Dates
