Blossoms @ Rock City

Before the arrival of Blossoms, you would be forgiven for thinking the best thing to come from Stockport was the road to Manchester, however the quintet has put the town firmly on the music map with their synth led indie rock style. Such is the rise of Blossoms that they have Liverpool favourites The Coral supporting them at a homecoming gig next June at Stockport County’s Edgeley Park to go alongside their two top 5 charting albums.

Blossoms rolled onto a sold-out Rock City on Wednesday evening, and with heavy security measures in place after a recent pepper spray incident at a Lil Pump gig, the youthful crowd were in fine voice. Supporting Blossoms firstly was London-based Irish trio Whenyoung before main support act Fuzzy Sun, who incidentally are on Blossoms own record label Very Clever Records, took to the stage. The band played 7 songs including their 80’s Hall & Oates sounding single “Want Love” and several heavier tunes, a band to keep an ear out for, for sure.

Blossoms opened with “I Can’t Stand It”, the lead single from their most recent album ‘Cool Like You’ before blasting into “Blow”, one of the bands earliest songs. Within Rock City there was barely a person who wasn’t singing along to the band’s hits, “How Long Will It Last”, “Getaway” and “Honey Sweet” all getting a play early on in the gig. Following this, there was a variety of songs from their first and second albums which included lead single from their debut album, “Blown Rose”.

As the gig came towards its conclusion, the rest of the band left the stage to leave lead singer Tom to play a rousing acoustic version of break up ballad “My Favourite Room” followed by a crowd-pleasing medley of Babybird’s “You’re Gorgeous”, Wham’s “Last Christmas” and “Half the World Away” by Oasis.

The encore included a cover of The Smiths classic “Bigmouth Strikes Again” which only served to heat up the already sweat-filled room, before single “At Most a Kiss” and arguably the bands two biggest hits to conclude.  “There’s a Reason Why (I Never Returned Your Calls)” led to a euphoric reaction from the crowd, before finishing with their best-known song “Charlemagne” with the crowd baying for more.

There may not be many more opportunities to catch Blossoms at venues the size of Rock City as they seem to be destined for bigger things, and with their 30,000-sell-out homecoming gig on the horizon, it’s certainly an exciting time for the band and their fans.
