Black Peaks @ Rough Trade

Black Peaks’ series of in-store shows came through Nottingham’s own on Tuesday night in support of their new album “All That Divides”, and while it is a much more intimate venue than their headline performance at Rescue Rooms for Macmillan festival several weeks ago, the band swiftly make the room their own, opening with “Can’t Sleep” which instantly creates movement in the tightly packed crowd. However, it is frontman Will Gardner’s call to mosh with the opening of “Electric Fires” (a personal highlight from the new album) which completely opens the place up with everyone – including the gig photographer – getting involved in the pit which doesn’t let up the pace until the band had long since left the stage. The set is mainly based around new album tracks, many of which unheard live until now, which receive such a warm reception it is hard to believe that the album is less than a week old, with several old favourites (“Say You Will”, “Saviour”, and “Crooks”) also receiving outings, but as usual it is the exceptional chorus of “Glass Built Castles” which has the biggest reception, with the crowd almost drowning out the band with their sing-along. Closing track “Home” received nearly as energetic a response and it is clear to all in attendance that these new songs will be a staple in their set for years to come. Black Peaks have shown that they can perform in intimate venues and now on larger stages, and it is obvious that their domination of the rock world has only just begun, and they are surely destined for the big arena stages in their future – they certainly already have the songs and the live performance to pull it off.
